Morning Glory Cloud phenomenon 2

Warren sent me a slideshow on the Morning Glory cloud phenomenon in the Gulf of Carpenteria. Unfortunately the slideshow was in PowerPoint, so rather than spend hours converting it to a suitable format, I did a bit of research and found these two clips on YouTube.

Here are some impressive facts about the cloud formation:

  • It can be as long as 1000 kilometres
  • It ranges in height from 1-2 kms
  • Speeds along at 60km/hr
  • Is only 100-200 feet off the ground
  • Only occurs in the months from September to mid November

The first clip from aerialvideo.com.au has a great soundtrack.

The second video is a series of spectacular stills with a not so great soundtrack, but that’s a question of taste.

Yes, I saw it too. It was ironic that I was writing about Morning Glory and then looked out the window and witnessed a similar phenomenon. 🙂
