No longer having the excuse of watching the Tour De France, Dave returned to the beach yesterday to enjoy unseasonably warm water. Bevan asked a passer-by for confirmation as he couldn’t believe that the mercury had stopped at 17C!
With an air temperature of 8C and a water temp of 14.5C today, it’s not surprising that the number of idiots swimming at this time of the year has dwindled. Die-hard Seasoned Idiots such as Warren, Malcolm, and Mike didn’t appear too fazed by the drop in water temp. Chris C. also ventured in.
Dave had trouble entering the water despite the protection of his wetsuit. He relented and enjoyed a delightful three inch layer of icy water on the surface coupled with a headache that endured to the end of the island. Fortunately, there were some warm patches lingering from yesterday but they were few and far between. It was funny observing the frosty breaths of Judy and Bevan at the post as we watched a stunning sunrise.
Dave was given the choice regarding the route home and was keen to swim straight back, but we detoured via the island and back around the dirty cone. The water is calmer but still dirty after the wild weather last week.
For the record and from what Dave recalls, swimming yesterday were Seasoned Idiots – Big Jim, Malcolm, Warren, Mike, Peter, Meryl, and Di; Real Idiots – Bevan, Judy, Dave, and Linda (after coffee); and Pre-Dawn Idiot – Phil. Today the crowd consisted of Season Idiots Malcolm, Chris, Warren, and Mike; and Real Idiots – Judy, Bevan, Dave, and Linda (swimming after coffee again).
I did enter the abyss around 7.50 after school dropoffs this morning. And just had lunch down there… wow, great weather or what!
Well done getting back in Dave. I can advise that I kept Idiot status up yesterday and this morning albeit on my own, having had a 3 week hiatus with rain and dirty water, the swims were not as bad as I thought. Still a wee bit dirty, quite chilly in parts but Idiot status retained for the month of August. Bring on 13 degrees !!
Thanks Ian! Today was mild all over whereas last week plenty of cold patches! We are being lulled into a false sense of security and I know that a blast of arctic ice water is just around the corner. You must have just missed us. We head out around 6.40ish at the moment…
