Swimming adventures abroad

The email that Bevan sent describing his swimming adventures on the Amalfi Coast deserves to be recorded for all time.

Hi All.

Finally arrived at the very beautiful Praiano on the Amalfi Coast. Clear blue skies, 30+ degrees.  The water is crystal clear but the “beach” has shitty pebbles to negotiate to the water.

So it was that with my brand new boardies and goggles I carefully waddled to the waters edge. The “beach” was very narrow and it had several people standing waist deep in the water. So being an expert long distance strong swimmer I felt I should show some humility and discreetly dive in the water and swim out into the distance.

However, just before I launched off, I noticed a couple of these funny little brown things. Strange, I thought, they look remarkably like jelly fish!! “No” my brain said, have to be baby cuttlefish – not that I have every seen a baby cuttlefish before.

I shove off for my swim, did not get to swim one stroke and bang, I head butt a jelly fish. Instant pain. All I could do was get out of the water, roll up into a small ball and cry my eyes out. It was extremely painful.

This is a photo- three days later.

Got back into the water yesterday. It is just beautiful.   But give me Balmoral any day.

And here is the photo.
