Yesterday, Judy and Dave headed down to Middle Head for a mid-morning stroll. It was a hot and muggy day but fortunately a slight breeze was blowing. We relaxed at Middle Head and watched the ferries pitching and rolling wildly on the huge swell.
On the way back, we stopped at the National Parks and Wildlife office to enquire about a wall that has puzzled Dave for several months. Knowing that it had something to do with the harbour defences, Dave was keen to find out more. The wall can be seen from the 1801 Old Fort lookout. These photos show it clearly:
Thanks to a 1995 study conducted by NSW University students of Landscape Architecture, a well documented and catalogued book details the harbour defences around Middle Head.
After leafing through a few hundred pages, the mystery was finally solved. The wall is in fact a Submarine Miners Observation Post built during World War 2.
The next piece to the puzzle is working out how to get to it!
Gosh, I’m blushing after reading that dialogue !!
They are very personal questions about me standing up and the tunnel, so I will ignore them.
Good points 🙂
God-damn! Is nowhere sacred?? Are you standing up when you paddle past?
I wonder if there is a tunnel nearby? We all live in a yellow submarine.
I have often paddled past this wall, around the corner from Obelisk. It often has naked men sunbathing near it, so Dave, get your tackle out and walk around from Obelisk.
And no playing submarines !!
