Five idiots plus one flippin’ idiot lined up in below average conditions for the annual Great Balmoral Swim from Edwards Beach rocks to Balmoral Sailing Club. Parking was not a problem at 6am when it’s wet overhead and underfoot.
Chris, Dave S, and Matt headed to Edwards Beach in one car whilst Bevan, Dave U, and Jasmine – our youngest flipping idiot recruit (like father like daughter) headed over in the other. The plan was to pick up Judy along the way but that proved to be a fruitless exercise.
Matt, Dave, and Chris walked around to the assembly point and ‘warmed up’ with some stretching exercises, whilst the sensible others waited in warmth and comfort for Judy’s arrival.
At 6.35am we donned our goggles, swim caps, and flippers (Jasmine) and struck out towards the island. A party of six started but we were seven by the end of the island. Hooray! Judy has been found! Talk about great timing! At the end of the island a stiff wind was noticeable but fortunately had little effect on our progress. The water was a perfect temperature and fairly clear.
Awaiting to greet us on the other side was Big John with a couple of bottles of sparkling Shiraz – delish! Thanks John! Hilarious discussions ensued that had us all doubled over in fits of laughter. What a great way to start the day!
The distance of the swim was approx. 1100m but a special mention must be made for our youngest recruit who probably swam (or flew) about 1500m. Well done Jasmine!
Noted absences: Stephen who had intimated yesterday that he was only firing on three cylinders, Sutho – who was OT, and Megan – the Cammeray Honey Tart lady… Megan… Wherefore art thou?
Congrats. everyone…..really wished I could have been there…as have never done that route….
Unfortunately…I was a good match for the day… a little but ‘under the weather’ .
Looked like a great swim and matt reported it was .
Sutho is in Europe for 3 more weeks…..so no reply forthcoming..
Hopefully…hopefully I may be there tomorrow…

Tomorrow at 6.30am for a swim, I believe. Matt had a great suggestion of walking around to BSC and swimming from there to the Steps. Not sure whether we will be doing that tomorrow but I’m keen.
