Insofar as the cold morning, wind blowing, choppy water, participants (Judy, Dave U., and Dave), route chosen, and water temp… it was a glorious repeat of yesterday. A fair chop to contend with swimming out, and spotting the post was difficult in the low light and lumpy sea. A quick chat ensued, then Dave U. headed for shore whilst Judy and I swam to the island. There was quite a noticeable undercurrent at Bevan’s rock and waves splashed against the rocks. Straight back to the Steps thanks Judy, and we were done. Sensational!
Seasoned Idiots enjoying this morning’s swim included Meg, Janice, Ruth, Rocket Rod, Robert, Di, Vic & Rosemary, and Pam (or was that yesterday?). Water temp taker Ruth recorded 16C degrees. Thanks Ruth!
I asked Di about the distance between the moon and the star (is it Venus Di?) this morning, as yesterday they were much closer together. It seems that the moon is rotating the earth at a much faster rate than the star’s orbit of… and that’s about where I lost the thread 😉 Sufficed to say that the two planets would be closer later on (about 7.30am) but we wouldn’t be able to see them.
A warming coffee and conversation with Judy & John to finish and that’s a perfect start to the day 🙂
Ha!! Love having an astrophysicist on the steps. Personally. I’m with. the ‘Twinkle twinkle litttle star’ school of astronomy! Cya all tomorrow. C
Dave, Dave, the moon is a satelite of the earth, not a planet, Venus IS a planet. Venus rotates around the sun (which is a star) and the earth also rotates around the sun but at a different speed as it has a different mass and is at a different radius (Kepler’s third law, OK?). The moon rotates around the earth, but moon rise gets later every day, currently just over an hour later, so yesterday it was higher in the sky at 6.30am than today. Venus changes its position relative to us only very slowly so to all intents and purposes it was in the same spot at 6.30am this morning as it was yesterday.
